چکیده

The effects of the hepatotonic Liv.52 on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced changes in the activities of the microsomal enzymes, aniline hydroxylase, p-aminopyrine N-demethylase activities, although the decrease in AHH activity could not be prevented. Kinetic studies showed that the effect of Liv.52 was not due to an alteration in the Km values of the enzymes. The possible mechanism by which Liv.52 moderated the CCl4-induced changes in the microsomal drugmetabolizing enzymes is discussed.

Detoxification of cassava leaves by simple traditional methods.

Cassava leaves, which usually contain large quantities of cyanogenic glycosides, were processed into a Zairian traditional vegetable sauce "Mpondu" by simple methods which included blanching (10 min), mashing and then boiling for 20-80 min. These methods enhanced the detoxification of the leaves, with blanching alone resulting in the loss of 57% of the free (non-glycosidic) cyanide content and ...

Presence of two molecular weight forms of somatostatin in neurons from chick embryo cerebral hemispheres in culture.

Following its isolation hypothalamic extracts [l] the tetradecapeptide somatostatin (SS-14) has been found to be widely distributed throughout the central nervous system [2], the gastrointestinal tract and the pancreas [3]. Evidence for synthesis of SS-14 by cerebral cells in culture has also been reported (4,5]. We report here that neurons from chick embryo cerebral hemispheres, cultured in se...

Toxicology of chloral hydrate in the mouse.

Chloral hydrate has been found in our drinking water supplies at levels up to 5 micrograms/1. The purpose of this study was to evalute the acute and subchronic toxicology of chloral hydrate in the random-bred CD-1 mouse, to provide data for risk assessment. The acute oral LD50 of this compound was 1442 and 1265 mg/kg in male and female mice, respectively. Acute toxicity appeared to be related t...
